While Hvar is famous for its beaches and sunshine in the summer these days, tourism was originally focused on its healthy climate and winter.

The potential for winter tourism has always been there, but recent generations have focused on the summer season. In an effort to prolong the season and revert to the traditions of winter tourism, Restaurant Gariful decided to initiate a new tourmament in October three years ago, celebrating the traditions of the sea and late-season tourism.
As Hvar’s most exclusive fish restaurant, It was perhaps natural that the tournament should focus on the sea, and Peskafondo was born, a two-day contest to catch the most squid in the abundant Adriatic Sea.
From its humble start in 2011, Peskafondo has grown in interest, publicity and international appeal, and the 2014 Pesakondo was the biggest ever, attracting some 32 teams, with competing teams from Bosnia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Italy and France.
While bad weather forced this year’s event to take place in just one day, everyone agreed that it was the best Peskafondo so far, which was won by Nehaj with a catch of 3.75 kg, while the youngest competing team averaged just 7 years old.
This year’s after-party was held at Hotel Riva and hosted by co-sponsor Suncani Hvar Hotels, and the support of the Central Dalmatia Tourist Board indicated how far Peskafondo has come in terms of official support in just three years. The party included live music, a French magician, fireworks and fine wines provided by some of Croatia’s top winemakers, such as Tomic, Dubokovic and Grgic.
The party went on long into the night, and was extremely well attended, with more than 400 people taking advantage of a special Facebook offer of accommodation and party for Peskafondo 2014.
An excellent event, and Gariful thanks all who took part and attended, with everyone contributing to a small step to extending the season.
